Dr. J. Paolo Magcalas was elected in November 2016 and represents Trustee Area 3 (the southwest region). Dr. Magcalas brings energy, passion and diverse experience to the Anaheim Elementary School Board. He is an Anaheim native and graduate of Clara Barton Elementary School. He teaches Ethnic Studies and United States history at Loara High School. He also teaches part time in the Master of Arts in Teaching Program at Chapman University. In 2016, Dr. Magcalas was named Top 25 Teachers in Orange County according to O.C. Parenting Magazine.
He is proudly affiliated with the Paulo Freire Democratic Project, the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME), the American Education Research Association (AERA), the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), the National Association for Ethnic Studies (NAES), the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) and the California School Boards Association (CSBA).
Dr. Magcalas has presented his research in numerous national and international conferences and his work was even published in UCLA’s Center X Education Journal. Dr. Magcalas earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Long Beach, Master of Arts degree in Education from Pepperdine University and his Ph.D. in Education from Chapman University. He was also awarded the Paulo Freire Outstanding Graduate Student Award from Chapman University. Currently, Dr. Magcalas is turning his dissertation into a book. He is also working on his Administration Credential from California State University, Fullerton.
