Vaccinations

On June 30, 2015, Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 277 (SB 277) changing school immunization requirements. The new vaccine law takes effect on January 1, 2016 and requires that all children in California be fully vaccinated to attend public or private school unless they have a valid medical exemption or a valid personal beliefs exemption on file with the District before January 1, 2016. Students will have to meet all of the age appropriate State immunization requirements for admission to school as of July 1, 2016.

The District is required to implement SB 277 which will:

  • No longer permit immunization exemptions based on personal beliefs for children enrolling in public and private schools
  • Permit personal beliefs exemption (PBE) forms on file with the District by December 31, 2015 to remain valid until a student enrolls in transitional kindergarten/kindergarten or 7th grade
    • PBE forms are available on the Shots for School website and can be submitted to the District as follows:
      • Turned into your school office on or before December 18, 2015 (last day of school before Winter Break)
      • Mailed  or faxed to your school office provided it is postmarked by December 31, 2015
  • Permit valid medical exemptions provided by a licensed physician
  • Not apply to:
    • Students in home-based private schools
    • Students enrolled in an independent study program who do not receive classroom-based instruction
  • Not prohibit a student who qualifies for an individualized education program (IEP), pursuant to federal law and Section 56026 of the Education Code, from accessing any special education and related services required by his or her IEP
  • Allow for the immediate enrollment of foster and homeless youth pending the receipt of immunization records
  • Require the District to obtain documentation of every student’s immunization status and maintain a record of the immunizations of each student
  • Require the District to exclude a student from school until the immunization is obtained or an exemption is granted based on a valid medical exemption or PBE on file before January 1, 2016
