Requesting Short Term Independent Study

Independent Study assignments provide students with an opportunity to recover lost learning time and will remove an absence from their attendance record. Independent Study may be requested for each absence with a maximum of 15 days per school year.

If your child has been absent this school year you may request an Independent Study agreement by doing the following:

  • Read and complete the information and agreement below to request an Independent Study work packet. The agreement and work packet will be printed and sent home with your student.
  • Once the work packet has been completed return the packet and agreement to your child’s school office.

*Please note: Independent Study is a general education program.  Work provided aligns to grade level standards and does not include Individualized Education Plan services or accommodations.

Objectives, methods of study, methods of evaluation, and resources

Subject/course objectives reflect the curriculum adopted by the district's governing board and are consistent with district standards as outlined in the district's subject/course descriptions.

I acknowledge receipt of the information above.

    Assignments

An assignment calendar/list will be provided to the student and parent. Assignments must be completed by the student and returned to the teacher within the trimester the Independent Study is offered. Substandard/incomplete work, will require an evaluation to determine if the student will receive attendance credit for all of the days stipulated in this written agreement.

I acknowledge receipt of the information above.

    Voluntary statement

Short Term Independent Study is an optional educational alternative in which no student may be required to participate; traditional classroom instruction has been offered and is always available. In the case of expelled students (Education Code §48915) and/or students whose expulsion has been suspended (Education Code or §48917), the student has been offered the alternative of classroom instruction.

I acknowledge receipt of the information above.

Equitable provision of resources and services

The independent study option is substantially equivalent in quality and quantity to classroom instruction, and students who choose to engage in independent study have equality of rights and privileges with students in the regular school program.

I acknowledge receipt of the information above.

    Policies and Procedures

    • The parent/guardian agrees to provide assistance and support, and is required to check for completion and quality of assigned work on a regular basis.
    • The student agrees to complete work as listed by the assigned teacher.
