Dear Parents and Families,
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. I am your principal, Dr. Michael Heiner. I have been at Olive Street for the past six years, serving as vice principal and principal. I am currently in my twenty-fourth year in education and feel it is a privilege to serve your children, you and our community. Although challenging given the circumstances, I look forward to a successful school year. I would like to take this time to introduce Ms. Elizabeth Amador, our new vice principal. Mrs. Anna Kim was recently promoted to principal in our district and Ms. Amador will assume her role here at Olive Street. Congratulations Mrs. Kim and welcome Ms. Amador.
As many of you know, we will be starting the school year at 100% distance learning. We understand the challenges this imposes on students and families. The Anaheim Elementary School District and Olive Street School staff have been working tirelessly to ensure that students are provided an outstanding educational experience regardless of the challenges. Our first day of school is Thursday, August 13, 2020. All students are expected to be logged on to their device and ready for live instruction at 8:10 am. Please be sure to have your child’s device charged and ready to go.
One of the things that will be new to distance learning is “live” instruction each day. Utilizing digital platforms like Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Seesaw, and many others, we will be able to provide direct live instruction as well as assignments which can be completed during the school day. These platforms allow us to provide music instruction, social-emotional lessons, and library time, just as we would here on campus.
As always, we will focus on a strong, well-rounded academic base, supported by high standards and expectations, engaging lessons, and technology. We will continue to communicate with parents and families through ParentLink messages, email, various social media platforms, and school and district websites. Please check these frequently for up to date information.
Keep in mind that your children’s well-being and staff safety is our priority. As soon as we can safely return to the classroom, we will notify families. Opportunity rises from adversity. I have no doubt that our staff, our children, our families, and our community will successfully take on the challenges presented to us during this time. I look forward to seeing everyone once again when it is safe. We are here to serve you.
As always, we invite any comments, concerns, complaints, or commendations. Our doors are open, and we at Olive Street know that our main focus is on the success of scholars and the relationships with our families.
Michael Heiner, Ed.D.
