New AESD Soccer League Helps Students Thrive
What first started as a friendly soccer scrimmage a few years ago between two neighboring schools- Jefferson and Olive St. Elementary Schools- has now grown into a popular afterschool youth soccer program. The AESD Soccer League season begins on January 23 and this year will include teams from 8 schools: Guinn, Jefferson, Lincoln, Loara, Mann, Olive St, Roosevelt, and Westmont Elementary Schools.
Tryouts for the co-ed school teams took place before Winter Break and were open to all 4th-6th grade students. The teams are coached by AESD staff and are bussed to the soccer matches at schools throughout the District, giving students a preview of what participating in high school athletics would look like. In addition to the benefit of physical exercise, being on the school’s soccer team also teaches students good sportsmanship and helps them thrive in school by working with their coaches to establish academic and behavioral goals.
Follow the season on our social media accounts and mark your calendars for the league championship which is scheduled for March 27!

New this year: AESD Honor Band
Did you know that this school year the District started an Honor Band? The Anaheim Elementary School District Honor Band marched in the Halloween Parade back in October and will also be participating in the Orange County Black History Month Parade that will take place on Saturday, February 1, 2020, in Downtown Anaheim along Anaheim Blvd. The Honor Band is composed of one hundred 5th and 6th-grade students from all 23 AESD schools and is one of the few elementary school marching bands in the entire state. We are proud of these young musicians and hope that their interest in music lasts a lifetime!
NAMM Helps Students Make Music and Memories
For the sixth year in a row, the NAMM Foundation held a NAMM Day of Service at one of our AESD schools. This year the lucky school was Horace Mann Elementary School and on the morning of Tuesday, January 14, 2020, the campus was full of music industry professionals who volunteered their morning to engage students in music-making magic. Students rotated through a series of workshops with instruction in guitar, ukulele, drums, melodicas, and choral. The NAMM Foundation also presented the District with a $10,000 check to purchase additional instruments for our program. We appreciate NAMM’s on-going support which helps enrich our elementary music education program and make it one of the best in the country.
Children Giving Gifts
During the Holiday Season, many children wait in anticipation to receive gifts but thanks to the Children Giving Gifts organization, last month all 528 students at Olive St. Elementary School had the opportunity to experience the joy of giving for themselves.
Olive St. Principal Dr. Heiner recalls how over 20 years ago, when he was a new teacher in the District, a local business donated toys during the holidays for students but staff noticed that instead of choosing a toy for themselves, many students chose a toy to give to a sibling or a friend. This really impacted Dr. Heiner early in his career so when he heard about the chance to partner with this organization, he was thrilled.
It’s the natural generosity in children that led to the creation of Children Giving Gifts in 2008 by Janeen Reiser with the goal of nurturing the development of children’s self-esteem, compassion, and dignity by providing the ability for them to give to others. We are grateful to Janeen and team for setting up shop at Olive St. and allowing students the freedom to “shop” for a special adult in their life and learn about the power of giving to others.
Meet our Staff: Pamela Fullmer
Pamela Fuller has been part of AESD’s Fiscal team for 5 years. As an Accounting Technician, one of the most important things she does is support all 23 schools to manage their ASB (Associated Student Body) accounts which help students participate in enrichment activities such as Outdoor Science Camp. She likes working for the District because she believes in the value of making high-quality education available for all students. Pamela is an enthusiastic fan of the British royal family (yes, she watched the Royal weddings live!) and in her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, and binge-watching on Netflix and Disney+.
