Dear Parents and Families,
We are off to a tremendous start to our 2019-2020 school year. It was great seeing everyone and meeting new families during our Back to School Night and Parent-Teacher Conferences. We have a few new faces here at Olive Street as well as new programs to support all of our scholars in academic areas and social-emotional learning.
Please join us in welcoming Ms. Holly McKinley, Mr. Daniel Howe, and Dr. Stephen Pu. Ms. McKinley is one of our new sixth grade teachers. Mr. Howe is currently serving as our instrumental music teacher, providing music instruction for our fifth and sixth-grade scholars. Dr. Pu is also one of our new music teachers. He teaches general music for all classes from transitional kindergarten to fourth grade. Welcome new Jaguars.
This is the first year Olive Street School will be providing Dual-Language Immersion program in Spanish. This program is designed to support students in becoming bi-literate in English and Spanish. For the 2019-2020 school year, Olive Street will have one kindergarten DLI class led by Mrs. Patricia Valencia. Next year, the program will be expanded to include first grade. We are excited to provide this program to our families and look forward to growing in the future years.
Technology has always been an important element in supporting 21st-century learning. Knowing this, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to engage teachers and scholars in activities and programs that are technologically driven, focusing on critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This year each student will have access to their own devices at school. The Anaheim Elementary School District is a 1:1, device to student, district and has provided Olive Street with the resources needed to support technology in the classroom for every student.
We will continue to provide music instruction for every student at Olive Street. We understand that teaching the whole child, through music, offers benefits that impact both academic and behavioral success. We look forward to future concerts, events, and performances as Mr. Howe and Dr. Pu schedule them throughout the school year.
Our family engagement and parent involvement continue to grow. Through the support of our Family And Community Engagement Specialist (FACES), Mrs. Elida Torres, many programs such as Parent Leadership Institute, Parenting Partners, PTA, School Site Council, and Padres en Acción continue to have great success in providing training, information, and services for our families.
We provide professional development and coaching support for all teachers. We understand that growing professionally and staying current with new strategies in instruction is important to the success of every scholar. Therefore, we provide training, with personal and grade level coaching by Mrs. Tamela Crowe, our Curriculum Coach, and Ms. Heather Boling, our Digital Learning Coach. The support is maintained throughout the school year, adjusting to the specific needs of our school and scholars.
Each year we inform parents about health and safety policies and procedures. Olive Street School is a Single Point Of Entry school. Access during school hours can only be granted through our main office. Therefore, identification is required for all visitors to our school.
We want to continuously thank all of you for your patience and understanding during drop-off and dismissal in our parking lot. Our goal is to ensure student safety throughout the process and we want to thank you for your help in making this happen.
Please understand that our district wellness policy restricts the consumption of unhealthy items provided at school. Basically, we are asking that instead of items like cupcakes or candy for birthday celebrations, families are invited to provide pencils, stickers, or other non-food items to share and celebrate your child’s birthday, if they wish. We truly appreciate your understanding.
As always, we invite any comments, concerns, complaints, or commendations. Our doors are open, and we at Olive Street know that our main focus is on the success of scholars and the relationships with our families.
