AESD Superintendent Dr. Chris Downing Completes a Year of Outstanding Accomplishments

ANAHEIM— Trustees in the Anaheim Elementary School District rated District Superintendent Dr. Christopher Downing as outstanding in his annual performance-based evaluation and thanked him for an array of accomplishments in instruction, student support systems, facilities, funding, budgeting, and District morale.

“We are very proud of the work Dr. Downing has done in AESD since his arrival last year. The whole concept behind providing an e²STEAM-D education at every single school site in AESD is brilliant and really highlights our commitment to ensure EVERY child in our district receives an educational experience that is meaningful and meets the demands of the world we live in today,” said Board President Ryan Ruelas. “I applaud Dr. Downing’s commitment to forming partnerships with other stakeholders in the community, specifically the signing of the Anaheim Educational Pledge last October with Anaheim Union High School District, CSUF, UCI, and other partners from our community. And his endless energy to promote the wonderful things taking place in our district throughout our community only illustrates his strong belief in and commitment for our amazing AESD.”

Ruelas said trustees lauded Dr. Downing for his calm and confident leadership style, ability to empathetically resolve conflicts and challenges, his open and transparent communication, and for his engagement with all District stakeholders.

Dr. Downing joined the Anaheim Elementary School District after a highly successful teaching and administrative career in the Los Angeles Unified School District, where he last served as an area superintendent responsible for 147 schools. Trustees also lauded him for successfully transitioning from such a large district into Anaheim’s kindergarten through sixth grade system.

Dr. Downing was selected superintendent last July after participating in a rigorous selection process that was overseen by a firm that helps school boards select school leaders for districts across the country. Dr. Downing emerged as the top choice for his position after multiple interviews, extensive reference checking, and a visit with his former colleagues in Los Angeles.

The Anaheim Elementary School District serves more than 16,000 students in 23 campuses in the city of Anaheim, making it the largest elementary school district in Orange County and the second largest in the State of California. Its students transition into the Anaheim Union High School District, and trustees noted Dr. Downing’s success in developing collaborative relations between the two school systems.

Dr. Downing was quick to attribute the accomplishments of his time in the District to the collaboration that has been established between his administration with the Board and the staff members of the District. “None of this would have been possible without the dedicated work of our school principals and their teaching and non-teaching staff members. We work as a team in the District with a clear focus on what is best for students,” he said.
